TerraViso Monitoring & Change

A landscape is never really finished

Habitats develop. Management changes. Restoration takes effect. Development creates new pressures. Weather, climate and natural processes reshape the landscape over time.


A habitat baseline captures an important point in that story.


TerraViso is being developed to help make that baseline something we can return to — allowing new evidence to be compared with what was understood before and helping build a clearer picture of how a landscape is changing.

  • Much environmental information describes a landscape at a particular moment.


  • That snapshot matters. It establishes what was present, where it was found and the evidence available at the time.


  • But some of the most important questions only emerge later.


What has changed?

Where has it changed?

Is the landscape moving in the direction we expected?

Are ecological relationships strengthening or weakening?


  • By maintaining a consistent evidence foundation, TerraViso creates the potential to examine not simply the state of a landscape, but its trajectory.

  • Meaningful comparison needs a reliable starting point.


  • TerraViso's workflow brings imagery, environmental information, habitat interpretation, professional review and quality assurance together before establishing a controlled baseline.


  • That baseline provides a point of reference against which later evidence can be considered.


  • Rather than asking only what the landscape looks like now, we can begin to ask what has changed since it was last understood.

  • Monitoring becomes more useful when observations made at different times can be related to the same underlying landscape.

  • A relatively small intervention may strengthen a corridor between two larger habitat areas. The loss of a seemingly minor feature may create a significant gap in an ecological network.


  • Monitoring therefore needs to consider more than changes in habitat extent.

  • It is to maintain useful evidence of how the landscape is developing and what that change may mean.

  • Monitoring can provide evidence for deciding whether to continue an approach, modify it or investigate something unexpected.
